Trip Overview

Wednesday - 11th of November 2026

The endangered Black-necked Cranes that migrate to Phobjikha valley is a special conservation project of the Government of Bhutan, but also a cultural icon for the people of Phobjikha. The Royal Society for the Protection of Nature together with the communities in Phobjikha valley as created this special festival to spread awareness on the importance of conserving this endangered bird, and provide an avenue for the local community to renew their commitment to conservation of the black-necked cranes. The festival includes cultural programs such as folk songs and dances (some with black-necked crane themes) and mask dances performed by the local people, crane dances and environmental conservation-themed dramas and songs by the school children. The program usually starts by 9:30 am and lasts till late afternoon. The Crane festival is an integral part of the Community based-sustainable tourism initiative to promote local economic welfare through nature based tourism programs. We recommend at least a 10 night trip to include the festival with the hotspots of western Bhutan, or even include Bumthang valley and make it a 12-14 nights trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to visit Bhutan?
Yes. Almost all international visitors need a visa, arranged in advance through a licensed operator like Bhutan Travel Club — you cannot get one on arrival independently. A one-time visa fee of USD 40 applies, and we take care of the whole application once your trip is confirmed. Indian nationals travel on a permit instead of a visa.
What is the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)?
Bhutan charges a daily Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100 per person, per night (USD 50 for children aged 6–12; free for children 5 and under). Indian nationals pay Nu. 1,200 per night. The SDF funds free healthcare, education and Bhutan's carbon-negative conservation, and is arranged together with your trip — there is nothing extra to pay on arrival.
When is the best time to take this trip?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most popular, with clear skies, mild days and the biggest festivals. Winter is quiet, crisp and great value with sunny days, while summer (June–August) is lush and green with occasional afternoon rain. We are happy to advise on the best window for your dates.
How do I book and pay for my trip?
Once we have finalised your itinerary we send a confirmation invoice. Payment is by secure bank wire transfer or card. Your SDF and visa are processed together with the tour, so everything is settled before you arrive — no cash handovers on the ground.
Is Bhutan safe, and will I have internet?
Bhutan is consistently ranked one of Asia's safest destinations, with very low crime and welcoming people. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and towns, and a local SIM card with mobile data is inexpensive and easy to buy after you arrive.
What should I pack?
Bring layers for changeable mountain weather, a warm jacket for evenings and high passes, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a modest outfit — long trousers or skirt and covered shoulders — for visiting dzongs and temples. Your guide will advise on anything specific to your itinerary.
Are the festival dates fixed each year?
Bhutanese festival (tshechu) dates follow the lunar calendar and are announced each year, so they shift from one year to the next. We plan your trip around the confirmed dates — festival weeks are the busiest of the year, so early booking is strongly recommended.
Can I take photographs at the festival?
Yes — photographing the masked dances (cham) is generally welcome. Please be respectful of monks and performers, avoid flash inside temples, and follow your guide's advice on any restricted areas or sacred moments.
Will the festival be very crowded?
Popular festivals draw both locals in their finest dress and visitors from around the world. We arrange early access and good vantage points, and can balance the festival days with quieter cultural sightseeing so you enjoy the spectacle without the crush.
