Wangdue Phodrang is a beautiful valley with a fortress majestically overlooking the valley where the great Punatsangchu river meanders. The Dzong (fortress) serves as the administrative centre and was built in 1639 by Zhabdrung Nawang Namgyel, the leader who united Bhutan. The annual Wangdue phodrang Tsechu was introduced by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal upon the completion of the Dzong and is celebrated every year for three days. The Tsechu is known for the Raksha Mangcham or the dance of the Ox. It concludes with the unfurling of the Guru Tshengye Thongdroel (applique) where people throng to receive blessings. Observed with great festivity and joy, this festival is hailed as a deeply symbolic of the Buddhist festivals celebrated in Bhutan. Masked and dressed in elaborate silk brocade costumes, dancers depict the triumph of good over evil and the power of compassion to the haunting sounds of trumpets, cymbals and flutes that resounds the air. The trip combines this festival with other popular cultural attractions in Paro, Thimphu and Punakha valleys and can be comfortably done in 7-10 days trip.

Do I need a visa to visit Bhutan?
Yes. Almost all international visitors need a visa, arranged in advance through a licensed operator like Bhutan Travel Club — you cannot get one on arrival independently. A one-time visa fee of USD 40 applies, and we take care of the whole application once your trip is confirmed. Indian nationals travel on a permit instead of a visa.
What is the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)?
Bhutan charges a daily Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100 per person, per night (USD 50 for children aged 6–12; free for children 5 and under). Indian nationals pay Nu. 1,200 per night. The SDF funds free healthcare, education and Bhutan's carbon-negative conservation, and is arranged together with your trip — there is nothing extra to pay on arrival.
When is the best time to take this trip?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most popular, with clear skies, mild days and the biggest festivals. Winter is quiet, crisp and great value with sunny days, while summer (June–August) is lush and green with occasional afternoon rain. We are happy to advise on the best window for your dates.
How do I book and pay for my trip?
Once we have finalised your itinerary we send a confirmation invoice. Payment is by secure bank wire transfer or card. Your SDF and visa are processed together with the tour, so everything is settled before you arrive — no cash handovers on the ground.
Is Bhutan safe, and will I have internet?
Bhutan is consistently ranked one of Asia's safest destinations, with very low crime and welcoming people. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and towns, and a local SIM card with mobile data is inexpensive and easy to buy after you arrive.
What should I pack?
Bring layers for changeable mountain weather, a warm jacket for evenings and high passes, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a modest outfit — long trousers or skirt and covered shoulders — for visiting dzongs and temples. Your guide will advise on anything specific to your itinerary.
Are the festival dates fixed each year?
Bhutanese festival (tshechu) dates follow the lunar calendar and are announced each year, so they shift from one year to the next. We plan your trip around the confirmed dates — festival weeks are the busiest of the year, so early booking is strongly recommended.
Can I take photographs at the festival?
Yes — photographing the masked dances (cham) is generally welcome. Please be respectful of monks and performers, avoid flash inside temples, and follow your guide's advice on any restricted areas or sacred moments.
Will the festival be very crowded?
Popular festivals draw both locals in their finest dress and visitors from around the world. We arrange early access and good vantage points, and can balance the festival days with quieter cultural sightseeing so you enjoy the spectacle without the crush.
