About this property
Zhiwa Ling stands at Satsam Chorten, on the road between Paro town and the Taktsang trailhead, and is the only luxury hotel in Bhutan that is entirely Bhutanese-owned and Bhutanese-built. Master carpenters raised it in the traditional way — pegged timber joinery, hand-painted beams, rammed-earth and stone walls — with almost no imported material in the fabric of the building.
At the centre of the property is a genuine consecrated shrine room, its timbers salvaged from a four-hundred-year-old monastery in Gangtey and reassembled here; monks perform daily rituals in it and guests are welcome to sit in. Around it are gardens of willow and apple, a stone-walled lily pond, and a Japanese-inflected wing added for long-staying guests.
The kitchen runs a Bhutanese menu alongside Continental dishes, and the bar — panelled in old timber — is one of the few places in Paro where a traveller can sit by a fire with a glass of local ara. It is a fifteen-minute drive from Paro International Airport.
