About this property
Unusually for Bhutan, Mongar is built on a hillside rather than a valley floor — a small eastern town strung along a ridge, reached from the west over the Thrumshing La and a long day’s drive through the fir and rhododendron of Thrumshingla National Park. Almost everyone travelling the lateral highway towards Trashigang stops here for the night.
That is the job this hotel does. It belongs to the Wangchuk group, which runs sister properties in Thimphu and Bumthang, and it offers the kind of clean, unfussy room the east is short of. For anyone crossing Bhutan end to end it is the practical break in the longest stretch of the drive.
Why we like it
- In Mongar, the practical overnight between Bumthang and Trashigang
- At the eastern end of the drive over the Thrumshing La
- Part of the Wangchuk Hotels group, alongside Thimphu and Bumthang
