Four kilometres out of Trongsa, at Kewathang in Nubi, the road pulls away from the town and the country opens out. Norbu Lingka Resort stands on that stretch — far enough from the centre to be quiet in the evening, close enough that the dzong and its watchtower museum are a few minutes back down the hill.
Trongsa is the natural halfway house on the long haul between the western valleys and Bumthang, and a night here breaks a journey that is otherwise punishing. This is a modest, comfortable place of exactly that kind: somewhere to arrive at in the late afternoon, eat, sleep and leave early. In autumn and winter the mornings often begin with mist filling the gorge below.
