Haa Valley Camp

Glamping Luxury Tented Camp · Haa

About this property

The Haa valley was closed to visitors until 2002 and still receives a fraction of the traffic that Paro and Thimphu do, which is exactly why the camp is here. Canvas suites are pitched each season in a meadow above the Haa Chhu, spaced far enough apart that each one has its own patch of the valley.

These are not trekking tents. Each has a raised timber floor, a proper bed with a duvet, an armchair, a wood-burning stove and an attached bathroom with a hot shower. Meals are cooked fresh and served in a central mess tent, with dinner around the fire pit afterwards when the weather allows.

The camp operates in the shoulder and summer months and closes in deep winter, when the Chele La pass — at 3,988 metres the highest motorable pass in the country, and the road in from Paro — becomes unreliable. Days are spent walking to the Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo temples, up to the Chele La for the rhododendron bloom, or simply doing very little in a valley that has almost no one else in it.

Why we like it

  • Canvas suites with real beds, wood stoves and en-suite hot showers
  • In Bhutan's least-visited western valley, closed to visitors until 2002
  • Reached over the Chele La, the highest motorable pass in the country
  • Walks to the Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo temples from camp
