About this property
Phobjikha is a broad glacial bowl at about three thousand metres, treeless on the floor and rimmed with blue pine, with the Gangtey Goenpa monastery on a spur at its head. From late October the black-necked cranes arrive from Tibet to winter here, and the valley becomes one of the few places in Bhutan where the wildlife rather than the architecture is the reason to come.
Tented camps suit this landscape. They sit lightly on it, and there is nothing between you and the valley but canvas. It is a seasonal, weather-dependent way to stay, kinder in the shoulder months than in the depths of winter, and it appeals to guests who would rather wake up in the valley than in a building above it.
Why we like it
- In the Phobjikha valley, winter roosting ground of the black-necked cranes
- Around 3,000 metres, in one of Bhutan's highest inhabited valleys
- A seasonal tented camp rather than a permanent building
