About this property
Dewachen is the long-established mid-range choice in Phobjikha, sitting low on the valley floor a short distance below Gangtey Goenpa. It is a plain, comfortable, thoroughly Bhutanese hotel: timber-panelled rooms, thick blankets, electric heaters and a bukhari burning in the dining room through the cold months.
At 3,000 metres Phobjikha has no central heating anywhere and can drop below freezing at night from November to March, so the room heaters and the hot water bottles at turndown matter more than any amount of design. The kitchen serves a set Bhutanese and Continental buffet, and the staff are used to groups arriving late off the Pele La road.
The hotel is a practical base for the Gangtey Nature Trail and for the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre on the valley floor, both within walking distance. Mobile signal is patchy and the Wi-Fi is slow — which most guests decide is part of the point.
Why we like it
- On the Phobjikha valley floor, walking distance to the crane marsh
- Heated timber-lined rooms — a real consideration at 3,000 metres
- Reliable mid-range comfort on the central Bhutan circuit
