About this property
Amankora is not one hotel but five, strung across western and central Bhutan — Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang — and built to be travelled as a circuit. The Thimphu lodge is the urban link in that chain, though urban undersells it: the building stands in blue pine forest at Motithang, above and apart from the capital.
The Aman formula holds here as it does at the other four — rammed-earth walls, very few rooms, an unhurried house rather than a hotel. Guests generally use it as the second or third night of a circuit, with Tashichho Dzong, the weekend market and the craft workshops a short drive downhill and the forest starting at the door.
Why we like it
- One of five Amankora lodges across western and central Bhutan
- In the pine forest at Motithang, above central Thimphu
- A short drive from Tashichho Dzong and the weekend market
