About this property
Amankora Paro sits at the head of the valley in a blue-pine forest above the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, reached by a private track that climbs away from the road. The lodge is deliberately austere: rammed-earth walls, a central bukhari stove burning in the lounge, and windows framed on the valley and the mountains beyond. It is the flagship of the five Amankora lodges scattered across western and central Bhutan.
The twenty-four suites are identical by design — a king bed, a daybed in the window, a soaking tub and a wood-burning stove — so that guests moving between Amankora lodges settle in instantly. Meals are served in a single dining room, and the kitchen leans on the valley’s own produce: red rice, buckwheat, seasonal greens and the national dish, ema datshi.
The lodge is the natural base for the hike to Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest, which begins twenty minutes away. Guests return to a traditional hot stone bath laid out in the pine trees, heated with river stones in the old way.
