About this property
Bumthang is four valleys rather than one, high and cold at around 2,600 metres, and it is the religious heart of the country — Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang are both here, along with buckwheat fields, apple orchards and the small town of Jakar. Getting here from the west is a full day’s drive over two passes, or a short hop on the domestic flight.
The lodge stands on the edge of the Wangdicholing Palace grounds, the nineteenth-century seat of the first king, right beside Jakar town. That setting makes it the most sociable of the Amankora lodges: you can walk out of it into a working Bhutanese town, which is not true of the others.
