Trip Overview

Bhutan Travel Club is a bike-fanatic company as the owners and staff are avid mountain bikers who love showing our visitors the best singletrack trails around the Thimphu city.  Grab your bike fromour office in Motithang and ride on the Wangditse XC trail that starts from the radio tower at Sangaygang. The trail goes straight up the ridge and about 500 m the trail levels out while crossing an open ridge with a field of prayer flags. The views of the city are excellent from here. Continue up the ridge. The trail to Chhokhortse continues up, at times to the left, then again along the ridge. It leads through open grassy areas, oak undergrowth and blue pines. Take the trail that descent through beautiul bluepine forests with many prayer flags until you reach Wangditse goenpa. Along the way there are good views of the Dzong and the underlying Thimphu valley. Descend down to the radio tower and visit the Taken Reserve Centre to see the national animal of Bhutan.

Continue down to the city and fuel-up with a nice lunch. After that continue riding to Kuensel Phodrangand ride for 5 km on gradual ascent to reach the biggest Buddha Statue of Bhutan overlooking Thimphu valley. After visiting the temple inside the gigantic Statue, continue on the singletrack trail inside Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park, which offers some great XC technical climbs and descends, and exit to Motithang using the newly constructed multi-purpose trail. (Time 6-8 hours).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to visit Bhutan?
Yes. Almost all international visitors need a visa, arranged in advance through a licensed operator like Bhutan Travel Club — you cannot get one on arrival independently. A one-time visa fee of USD 40 applies, and we take care of the whole application once your trip is confirmed. Indian nationals travel on a permit instead of a visa.
What is the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)?
Bhutan charges a daily Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100 per person, per night (USD 50 for children aged 6–12; free for children 5 and under). Indian nationals pay Nu. 1,200 per night. The SDF funds free healthcare, education and Bhutan's carbon-negative conservation, and is arranged together with your trip — there is nothing extra to pay on arrival.
When is the best time to take this trip?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most popular, with clear skies, mild days and the biggest festivals. Winter is quiet, crisp and great value with sunny days, while summer (June–August) is lush and green with occasional afternoon rain. We are happy to advise on the best window for your dates.
How do I book and pay for my trip?
Once we have finalised your itinerary we send a confirmation invoice. Payment is by secure bank wire transfer or card. Your SDF and visa are processed together with the tour, so everything is settled before you arrive — no cash handovers on the ground.
Is Bhutan safe, and will I have internet?
Bhutan is consistently ranked one of Asia's safest destinations, with very low crime and welcoming people. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and towns, and a local SIM card with mobile data is inexpensive and easy to buy after you arrive.
What should I pack?
Bring layers for changeable mountain weather, a warm jacket for evenings and high passes, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a modest outfit — long trousers or skirt and covered shoulders — for visiting dzongs and temples. Your guide will advise on anything specific to your itinerary.
Do I need to book this experience in advance?
Yes, we recommend booking ahead so we can arrange your licensed guide, private transport and any permits required. Even short day experiences in Bhutan must be accompanied by a licensed guide.
Is this suitable for beginners and families?
Most of our day experiences are relaxed and family-friendly. Let us know the ages, interests and any mobility needs in your group and we will tailor the pace and content to suit everyone.
What is included in this experience?
Typically a licensed guide, private transport, applicable entry fees and the activity itself. We will confirm exactly what is and is not included when we share your quote so there are no surprises.
