About this property

Wangdue Phodrang is the hinge of a Bhutan itinerary. The dzong stands on a long spur above the meeting of the Punak Tsang Chhu and the Dang Chhu — it burned down in 2012 and has since been rebuilt — and the town below is where the western circuit ends and the road east towards Trongsa, Bumthang and the Phobjikha valley begins. Most travellers pass straight through; some stay, because the next stretch is a long one.

Hotel Namsay Phodrang is one of the town’s tourist-standard hotels, the kind we book when an itinerary needs a night here to break the drive east, or when Punakha’s hotels are full during the spring festivals. It is a working stopover rather than a destination in itself, and there is no harm in saying so.

Why we like it

  • At Wangdue Phodrang, below the rebuilt dzong on its spur above the rivers
  • A practical night for breaking the drive east to Trongsa and Bumthang
  • On the road up to the Phobjikha valley and its black-necked cranes
